GRSE FIRE SAFETY
No Clowning around with Fire!
General Ricardo Sanchez Elementary hosted some very special
guests during National Fire Safety week on October 5th through
12th. Sparky and Rio Grande City firefighters visited the
school on October 9th to acquaint students with fire safety
tips. Firefighters brought in clowns and props to teach
students how “clowning” around with fire can
be dangerous. They discussed the importance of smoke detectors
and firefighters as well as Sparky grasped the undivided
attention of both staff members and students when introducing
fire-safety tips. Students as well as staff members participated
in the activities planned and enjoyed this learning experience.
Veterans Middle School
Veterans Middle School is doing their part to prepare students
for college by adding a new course, Exploring Careers and
College, to its curriculum this year. In order to expose
students to the endless possibilities of career paths and
universities that they can attend, Mrs. Veronica S. Garcia,
the course instructor, invited a speaker to enlighten her
students about Texas A&M. On September 12th, Roberto
C. Flores visited with the VMS students to speak about his
alma mater, Texas A&M University in College Station.
Mr. Flores taught for the RGCCISD before going back to school
to obtain his MBA at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
While visiting the Exploring Careers and College students
at VMS, he spoke to them about the traditions, degrees,
clubs, etc. that Texas A&M offers as part of college
life. He showed the students exactly where that university
is located on a map and talked about his wonderful memories
of taking part in the entire Aggie experience. Students
were able to ask Mr. Flores many questions and found his
visit very beneficial regarding that particular university
that they had been researching. The class looks forward
to learning about many other careers and colleges in the
near future by welcoming other speakers. A special thank
you is extended to Mr. Flores for taking the time out of
his busy schedule to positively impact the VMS students.
